Traffic signal at junction near school zone in Ambattur needs to be fixed

It stopped working two months ago due to a damaged cable; with institutions having reopened, residents want it repaired soon

With schools having reopened for the new academic year, the danger resulting from a non-functional traffic signal at the intersection of Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road and TVS Colony Main Road has increased significantly. The signal stopped functioning two months ago.

Without the traffic signal in working order, motorists and pedestrians find it difficult to negotiate this intersection in Mogappair. During certain hours of the day, students constitute a majority of the pedestrians.

Schools around the intersection include Velammal School, DAV Girls Senior Secondary School and Chennai Public School.

“A large number of school vans and cars are parked around the junction to pick and drop students. With the signal towards TVS Colony direction becoming defunct, motorists and pedestrians visiting the Colony find it risky to cross the intersection,” says long-time resident V. Rajagopal, president, Anna Nagar Western Extension Phase – II Residents Welfare Association.

One of the six traffic signals on the Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road, the traffic signal at TVS Colony intersection became defunct two months ago when the State Highways Department, which maintains Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road, was carrying out cable-laying work near the signal pole.

During this work, police sources say, the electrical cable of the signal got damaged accidentally.

TVS Colony and Officers’ Colony in Mogappair including its streets and the Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road are within the jurisdictional limits of the Tirumangalam traffic police.

Police sources say repeated reminders have been sent to their higher-ups, including those at the traffic wing at the Chennai Police Commissionerate in Vepery, to have the damage cable replaced.

Right now, the local traffic police are regulating traffic manually.
