As Dil Chahta Hai turns 18, here are 5 life lessons we learnt from the Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna starrer! | Bollywood Life

Dil Chahta Hai was an iconic film and made first-time director Farhan Akhtar stand out in the crowd. The film has been an inspiration for so many impromptu trips to Goa and liberating bike rides with friends. The first movie ever to portray the life of urban youth in such a cool and stylish way is now 18 years old. The movie remains fresh in our mind because it’s so easy to relate to almost every aspect of it. There’s always a goofy Saif Ali Khan in your friends circle. Someone witty like Aamir Khan’s character sweeps you off our feet every once in a while and the intense Akshaye Khanna reminds you of the artsy types you come across. DCH has given a new definition to friendship and Bollywood and in these 17 years there hasn’t been a single movie that can replace this cult classic. That makes us happy – after all, we wouldn’t want anyone to replace the madness of the original trio… or of the spirit they taught us to have!

Here are some life lessons we learnt from the film…

#Take road trips before it’s too late!

The film introduced Bollywood and us to the concept of road trips where you set out to an adventurous destination with your closest friends and make the most unforgettable memories. Sid, Akash and Sameer’s road trip to Goa made us want to pack our bags and go on a journey!

#Age is just a number

In the film Akshay’s character Sid falls for a much older woman, Tara (played by Dimple Kapadia.) While the two never get together, their love is true and Tara’s death leaves Sid bereft at first, but he finds himself to become a more evolved person after having come in contact with Tara. While watching the film we felt for these characters and never judged Sid for loving an older woman.

#Best friends are forever even if you are separated for years

Towards the end of the film Akash and Sid patch up with Sameer’s help at the hospital where Tara is dying (Sid’s love for her had been the cause of a rift between him and Akash.) Their friendship bears testimony to the fact that when you have a BFF, they are with you during your worst times and stand by you through thick and thin despite any differences you might have with them.

#Falling in love and getting your heart broken is worth it

While Sid’s love for Tara is unrequited, it is the most special relationship of his life which proves that even if love is lost, it’s memory should be cherished. Akash and Sameer too fall in love and get their hearts broken but when they are united with their beloveds it is all worth the pain!

#There is no such thing like love at first sight!

None of the three primary characters fall in love instantly (except for Sameer who thinks that every girl he meets and dates is “the one”) But they all and we too, learn along the way that you can only fall in love once you get to know the person you are attracted to.
