Springwatch star Michaela Strachan has had to wear hard contact lenses for her eye condition for many years, but now only needs to wear soft lenses in her right eye. Thrilled by the “game changer”, the 55-year-old excitedly shared the update with her fans on Instagram.

The presenter posted a picture of her right eye as she smiled for the camera.

In view of her 1,255 followers, she wrote: “Yesterday was an eye opener, literally.

“After 15 yrs of wearing hard contact lenses for an eye condition called Keratoconus, I’ve now been prescribed soft lenses and only now need for my right eye.(sic)

“It’s like swapping stilettos for slippers! It’s an eye game changer! I am in such a good mood.

“(This will probably only resonate with anyone else who has had eye issues!)

“#seeingbetter #keratoconus #agoodday.”

Keratoconus is an eye disease that affects the structure of the cornea, which can result in loss of vision.

The condition affects approximately one in 2,000 individuals.

The exact cause of the condition is unknown.

Michaela said she started to suffer from stress-related health problems at the peak of her career aged 26.

She previously said: “The main one was eczema, which I started to get on my arms, my ear lobes and, most agonisingly, on the insides of my eyelids.

“Some mornings I would have to bathe my eyes open and the irritation was so intense that I couldn’t help rubbing my eyes with my fists to relieve the pain.”

Excessive rubbing caused Michaela to suffer from “hugely swollen” eyes which she described as “giant red footballs”.

She added to Daily Record: “All the rubbing gradually warped my pupils and I developed another condition called keratoconus that means I now have to wear very hard contact lenses to protect my eyes.”

The Springwatch star was later warned by doctors that she could lose her eyesight completely if she continued to excessively rub them.

In 2013, the BBC regular said she was now free of her allergies, apart from one.

“The only niggling allergy I have now — which is ironic, considering my job — is that I’m allergic to elephants,” she continued.

Contact with the animals makes her eyes swell up and could cause rashes.

Michaela is best known for her work on the BBC’s watches series with Chris Packham.

She was forced to miss the 2020 series of Springwatch due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but made a return to the show earlier this year.
