Ben Foden’s father-in-law says couple were together three months before wedding

Ben Foden 's new father-in-law has said that his daughter's wedding "wasn't a surprise" because they had been dating three months and not two weeks, as the ruby star previously said .

Jackie Belanoff Smith's dad, New York lawyer Peter Smith, defended the whirlwind romance explaining that his daughter wouldn't marry someone she had only know for a fortnight.

He also said that Ben had called him and asked for his blessing for the marriage.

Peter claims Jackie and Ben had met at the "beginning of the summer", believed to be in Nantucket where she was staying.

The sports star moved to the States earlier this year to play rugby, however Peter's comment have led to some confusion as to exactly when the sports star began dating Jackie.

Back in June Ben had gone ' Instagram official' with former flame Miriam Murphy, who it was reported he flew over to New York to spend time together.

Jackie's dad Peter told the Mail Online : "I believe it was a bit more than a fortnight."

"Jackie is very successful in her own right and she met him at the beginning of the summer.

"The wedding wasn't a surprise. He called me to ask for my blessing and I gave it. I said, ‘I want her to have a long and successful marriage'."

Ben, who announced the surprise news on Instagram and did write that they had only dated each other for two weeks, wasted no time in gushing over his new wife.

He told followers: "Jackie is the greatest human being I've ever come across – she’s beautiful inside and out, intelligent, charming, funny, generous, kind, gentle, energetic the list goes on."

But more than this, Ben said he was certain that Jackie would make an excellent stepmother to his two young children Aoife, seven, and Tadhg, four, who he shares with first wife Una.
