Billie Piper has no regrets over 'reckless' party years with Chris Evans

Billie Piper has spoken candidly about her relationship with Chris Evans, joking their party lifestyle of ‘getting hammered for three years’ was exactly what she needed.

Coming into the public eye at the age of 16 as a popstar, Billie stirred controversy when she married radio DJ Chris, who was 17 years her senior.

Becoming known for her party lifestyle, Billie was 18 when she tied the knot with 35-year-old Chris in 2001, and they remained together for seven years.

But speaking to David Tennant during his podcast, Billie doesn’t regret that time in her life at all – in fact, she loves the memories of it and what it taught her, after becoming disillusioned with having a picture perfect pop star persona.

She told him: ‘[It was] so much fun. Living very hard, but with a lot of love and a big dose of curiosity. An amazing time.

‘It’s funny because everyone framed that period in my life as the sort of horribly, debauched, irresponsible me falling apart, looking like s**t, putting on weight… and that was really important to me, that period of my life. I needed that.’

‘Me not looking perfect every day in a tabloid was the best way for me to heal. Every time there’d be a picture of me looking completely groomed and manicured within an inch of my life, I can tell you I was completely unhappy and starving and dark on the inside.’

On her relationship with Chris, she told David: ‘We had a really amazing time together, you know? I imagine it’s what your uni years feel like. Sort of reckless, but you’re learning a lot.

‘It was an incredible time and not to undermine our relationship because we also had a very loving relationship. It wasn’t just, oh we’re getting, going out, getting f**ked.

‘We had a very caring, loving relationship.’

In 2005, Billie found herself with a whole new legion of fans as Rose Tyler in Doctor Who – joining Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor in the TARDIS.

David joined the cast as Tenth Doctor in 2006, with the pair heading off on adventures together and becoming firm friends IRL in the process.

Now, after both leaving the show, they have joined forces again for David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, talking about their time on Doctor Who as well as her career since.
