Boy George revealed he started his band Culture Club as a way of seeking revenge against an ex-boyfriend during Saturday’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
The singer, 61, explained how his former flame was in a music ensemble and when they went their separate ways, George started a group of his own to ‘annoy’ his one-time partner.
Pop star George eventually soared to the top of the music charts around the world with Culture Club, but before the band, he tried his hand at stacking supermarket shelves when he was kicked out of school, and also took on a job in a hat shop.
Getting his own back: Boy George, 61, revealed he started his band Culture Club as a way of seeking revenge against an ex-boyfriend during Saturday’s I’m A Celebrity
Talking about his past employment, George said: ‘Kicked out of school at 15, worked in a fruit factory for three weeks packing apples. Worked in Tesco filling the shelves.’
During a visit to the Bush Telegraph, comedian Seann Walsh said: ‘Boy George worked in Tesco, can you imagine?’
Doing an impression of George, he continued: ‘I’m not stocking the bread, why should I f***ing stock the bread, you stock the bread! Every little helps… no it doesn’t.’
Fighter: The singer explained how his former flame was in a music ensemble and when they went their separate ways, George started a group of his own to ‘annoy’ his one-time partner (L-R: Roy Hay, Jon Moss, Boy George and Mikey Craig seen on the Karma Chameleon music video set in 1983)
Boy George added: ‘I worked at a hat shop for about four years. That was my favourite job as I was allowed to dress up. Then I got fired for being late. I was late every day.
‘I had a boyfriend who was in a band, we split up and I thought I’m going to start a band just to annoy him. So that’s really how Culture Club started.’
Earlier in the series, George discussed how Culture Club got its name before saying he threatened to walk away from the band if Karma Chameleon was not included on their record.
Work: Talking about his past employment, George said: ‘Kicked out of school at 15, worked in a fruit factory for three weeks packing apples. Worked in Tesco filling the shelves’
The song was featured on the group’s 1983 album Colour by Numbers and it became their second single to reach the top of the charts after their 1982 hit Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.
Karma Chameleon remained at number one for six weeks and became the UK’s biggest-selling single of the year. It also spent three weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1984.
Speaking of his bandmates Roy Hay, Jon Moss and Mikey Craig, George said: ‘Karma Chameleon they hated. They hated it.
