Ciara and Russell Wilson Open a High School For Underserved Students: "We Are So Proud"

Ciara and Russell Wilson are continuing to use their platforms for good. On Friday, the couple announced the launch of their new public high school, Why Not You Academy. “I know some of you have been able to see the exciting news that Russell and I have been able to have one of our biggest dreams come true and that is with our first-ever Why Not You Academy here in Des Moines, Washington,” Ciara said in an Instagram video. “How great of an opportunity is it that we’re going to have a place and space for kids just like ourselves with big dreams?”

Russell also shared the exciting news on his Instagram, writing, “We are so proud to be opening our first @wnyacademy in Washington State!!! Opening Fall 2021, this tuition-free charter public school will open its doors to increase access to high-quality education for systematically underserved students.”

Ciara and Russell recently donated $1.75 million to Cascade Midway Academy (now called Why Not You Academy) after it ran into financial trouble amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve always held the belief that life’s successes start with a good education, but recognize that access isn’t always created equally for all,” Ciara and Rusell said in a press statement on the school’s website. “The Why Not You Foundation was created with the concept of empowering youth to lead with a why not you attitude . . . This school is a longtime dream of ours and it was important for us to find a way to combine traditional classroom learning with community and mentorship-based activities, in order to prepare kids for the real world. Why Not You is based on the idea that it can start with one and our hope is that this school will be the first of many.”
