Demi Lovato: Did She Skip the VMAs Because She HATES Taylor Swift?

Monday night was host to the 2019 VMAs, which was riddled with musical guests.

Even though Demi Lovato has recovered and is back to making music, she was a surprising no-show for the major music event.

When Demi offered a vague explanation, fans read between the lines. Did Demi ghost the VMAs to avoid Taylor Swift?

“Okay I can’t tell you guys what I’m doing today,” Demi posted before the VMAs, promising: “You’ll find out super soon tho.”

“But,” she assured her tens of millions of followers. “It’s making me SO HAPPY.”

“I’m having SO MUCH FUN and I can’t stop laughing,” Demi gushed, tantalizing her fans with curiosity.

She then instructed her followers: “Now go come up with crazy ass theories as to what it might be!!!”

Some, at least, concluded that she was preparing for the VMAs — maybe a surprise musical debut. But that was not the case.

Demi not only did not perform at the VMAs, she was not even part of the star-studded audience.

Fans were puzzled, and quickly settled on the explanation that she wanted to avoid one fellow musician in particular: Taylor Swift.

This theory gained traction when Demi took to her Instagram Stories once again to offer a non-explanation for her absence.

“I skipped the VMA’s for a REASON,” Demi wrote.

“Well,” she continued. “That and I just hate award shows.”

Was that reason Taylor? Was Demi shading her without even using her name?

“Btw… I didn’t ‘shade’ anyone last night,” Demi insisted on her Instagram Stories after those rumors took flight.

And she doesn’t just mean because vagueposting someone is not the same thing is “shade.” This is beyond technicalities.

“My REASON for not going is because I’m literally living my dream,” she shared.

And what dream is that, you ask?

Demi explained to her followers that she’s fulfilling her wish of “being on Will & Grace [right now] so stop reaching.”

For the record, Demi did tune in to the VMAs.

She offered her heartfelt congratulations to Normani.

“Literally couldn’t be more proud,” Demi gushed at her friend.

It may be that Demi skipped the VMAs in part in order to avoid temptation.

Gathering hundreds of rich musicians in one place means that more than just alcohol would be at the event. Maybe Demi is playing it safe.

But Demi was not kidding about appearing on the Will & Grace revival (reminder: it’s not a reboot).

She also shared a snap of her and Will & Grace star Sean Hayes laughing together, borrowing his post and putting it in her Instagram Stories.

It’s not that anyone disbelieved her, but Demi wanted to show her fans what a good time she’s having.

And that’s no surprise — as a Millennial, she probably watched a lot of the delightful series in her teens.

Though aspects of the show have not aged well, Will & Grace was groundbreaking and helped pave the way for multiple steps towards LGBTQ+ equality.

Congratulations to Demi for living out her dream and for getting to skip an event that she knew that she would not enjoy.
