Demi Lovato Says She and Selena Gomez Aren’t Friends Anymore

Demi Lovato is grateful for her stint as a Disney darling, but all the friendships she forged during that period of her life haven’t followed her into adulthood.

In Harper’s BAZAAR‘s May 2020 cover story, the “I Love Me” singer opens up about how her friendships with her previous Disney Channel clique—including the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus—have changed over the years.

Most notably, Lovato had retained a years-long bond with Gomez, but she reveals to BAZAAR that she no longer keeps in touch with her former best friend. She even hints that after her critically adored comeback performance at the 2020 Grammy Awards, she was conflicted about Gomez’s Instagram post applauding her return to the spotlight because they had lost contact over the years.

“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so [the Instagram post] felt … ,” Lovato shares with BAZAAR before stopping herself. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

Lovato also shared that she’s no longer in touch with the Jonas Brothers, but she’s still close with Miley Cyrus. The singers recently appeared together on Cyrus’s quarantine-conceptualized Instagram talk show, Bright Minded, during which the two chatted about growing up in the limelight and their admiration for each other.

“I talk to Miley [Cyrus]. She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have,” Lovato tells BAZAAR. “But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”

Although some friendships have faded, Lovato still looks back fondly at how beginning her career on Disney got her to where she is now.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities that I got. Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes,” reflects Lovato. “I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen.”
