Discovery+ to Remain It’s Own Streaming Service Amid HBO Max Merger

There’s a huge new update on the merging of the HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming apps!

Variety reports that while they are still set to be merged, parent company Warner Bros Discovery has decided to keep Discovery+ as it’s own standalone service.

It was previously reported that the two apps would combine into one, and throughout the time since, many of the HBO Max originals have been removed from the individual platform.

Several of the shows and movies that were removed from HBO Max have found a new home on another streaming app.

Now, the combined platform of both HBO Max and Discovery+, which still does not have a name, will move forward with content from both apps, while Discovery+ will still be available on it’s own as a lower-priced offering.

According to a report from Wall Street Journal, “the decision to keep Discovery+ is part of an effort to avoid risking losing a significant chunk of the app’s 20 million subscribers who might not to want to pay the higher price to access that content.”

Currently, HBO Max costs $15.99 for it’s ad-free subscription tier, while they also have a $9.99 ad-supported tier. Discovery+ comes in at $6.99 for ad-free, and $4.99 for ad-supported. The $15.99 is a recent price increase, their first since launching in 2020.

Warner Bros Discovery reportedly indicates that the new combined platform will cost more than what HBO Max currently does.
