Emily Atack receives apologies over vile DMs but grim messages haven’t stopped

Emily Atack has received a few apologies since speaking out about being sexually harassed in her DMs.

At the beginning of the month, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here favourite spoke publicly in a candid piece for Grazia, highlighting the grim, explicit messages that constantly fill up her inbox.

And, while promoting her new campaign with HelloFresh, she explained that the posts are still coming in since she spoke about her experiences.

When asked if they had stopped, the 30-year-old told Metro.co.uk: ‘Sadly no, it definitely hasn’t stopped, but there have been one or two messages that I’ve noticed that they’ve apologised.

‘They said, “I once said something to you a few months ago, I sent you a message, and I just want you to know that I’m sorry, and I have a daughter, and if I knew someone was doing that to her, and if I knew that her mental health was being affected by something like this, I wouldn’t have done it.”

‘So it’s a tiny little step, but I think if you can just make one person maybe change their thought process…

‘If you could just make the tiniest difference. The start is just getting the thought in someone’s mind to maybe realise that their actions could be quite damaging. If you can do that with one person, it’s a start isn’t it?’

Despite the messages still continuing, Emily is happy that she spoke out – and that there was such a warm reaction to her piece from most of the public.

‘I just can’t believe it. It’s been so heartwarming, and it’s something that has chipped away at me for quite a long time now. It’s this new world of the internet, something has got to be done. Enough’s enough now,’ she continued. ‘But what really fascinated me was how kind people were to me.

‘There were a few reactions which really hurt, when you see people say, “yeah, but you asked for that kind of attention”. It makes me so angry, and I really want to have that changed, I want to have those views change, because it’s just not right thinking that way.

‘The response was amazing, a really heartwarming response, it was great. Also the response was really encouraging to show that maybe there’s a case here to take forward, and to try and make a change somewhere.’

Emily has been a staple of our screens ever since she first appeared on The Inbetweeners, as Charlotte Hinchcliffe.

Since then, she has made us laugh, cry – and then laugh again – with her antics on I’m A Celeb, as well as Celebrity Juice.

And she isn’t resting on her laurels, bringing out her own sketch show.

But, while we’ve all totally fallen for her honest, sincere charm, the actress revealed that the messages she had been receiving made her question herself, and the persona that she was putting out into the public.

‘I wanted to talk about it because all these horrible messages, they were making me feel really isolated, and they were making me feel quite alone,’ she told us. ‘I’m a single woman, I live by myself, and there’s nothing like being reminded that you’re constantly single.

‘It really started to chip away at me, and I started questioning who I was as a person, and the persona I was putting out there. When I realised that I was feeling that way, I thought, I’ve got to openly talk about this otherwise I’ll just go into myself and it will get worse.

‘I was second guessing everything, questioning everything. I was thinking about taking certain sketches out of my sketch show because they were maybe talking about sex too much.

‘I was really questioning everything and I thought, if I come out and talk about it, maybe it might make me feel less alone, and it really did.

‘It’s just one of those awful things. It’s so terribly become something that I’ve completely tolerated. I just don’t think that I can do that anymore, because it was really starting to get in my head. Yeah, no more.’

Emily is currently working with HelloFresh, and has launched a How To Master Mealtimes YouTube series where she plonks herself down with different households, to chat all about food and how they’re all coping.

Food, fun and Emily Atack – what more could you need?

Lifting the lid on her ‘brilliant’ new venture, she said: ‘I’m doing this series, I’m following different households to see how they’re coping with meal times. All kinds of different families, some of them are a couple that live alone, and a family that have just had a baby, just seeing how they’re mastering mealtime. It was lovely, really, really great.’

‘I just basically invited myself around for a chat about food,’ she laughed. ‘And how HelloFresh has helped them in their personal situations, we talk about what they’ve been cooking… Because there are so many different recipes that you can choose from, and they’re really, really easy.

‘Lockdown was obviously a really terrible thing for everybody, but cooking, I really found a love for cooking. And with HelloFresh, it’s saved you so much time, so much money, minimal food waste and in the box, you get everything that you need.

‘You get the bits that you need, and that’s it. And they’re so gorgeous, the recipes are just absolutely gorgeous. It tastes amazing.’
