Grammy viewers concerned over Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ ‘demonic’ performance

Sam Smith and Kim Petras' performance of Unholy at the 65th annual ceremony of the Grammy Awards 2023 has been slammed as "demonic" by viewers.

Kim, 30, and Sam, also 30, made history with their Best Pop Duo/Group performance win at the awards ceremony, with Kim being the first transgender woman to win the award.

Kim said on stage as she accepted the award from popstar Madonna: "Sam, I love you so much and this song has been such an incredible journey for me."

After they were crowned winners, the duo performed their hit song Unholy together – but fans weren't overly keen.

Sam was seen wearing red on the night, with satanic headgear for a horror-themed performance with Kim.

"I know we on the right probably use the word satanic too often but this performance from Sam Smith is literally a tribute to Satan," one said on Twitter.

Someone else tweeted: "Sam Smith's Grammy performance is the music industry in a nutshell…. Demonic!"

Another shared: "That Sam Smith performance was weird I had to look away like why artists so obsessed with the devil????"

"I’m really so sick of the satanic and demonic references…even with the hypocrisy — I still wanna know WHY Nicki, Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, and so many others reference the devil," a third shared.

Another agreed by writing: "Why must so many artists have such demonic sets/performances?! I was really excited for Sam Smith to perform but that was honestly disappointing…"

Moments before Kim and Sam won their Grammy, Madonna, 64, said a few words on stage at the ceremony.

She said: "So, here's what I've learned after four decades in music — if they call you shocking, scandalous, troublesome, problematic, provocative or dangerous, you're definitely on to something."

"I'm here to give thanks to all the rebels out there forging a new path and taking the heat for all of it."

She continued: "You guys need to know — all you troublemakers out there — you need to know that your fearlessness doesn't go unnoticed. You are seen, you are heard; and most of all, you are appreciated.

"So now, speaking of controversy, it gives me great pleasure to introduce two incredibly talented artists who have risen above the noise, the doubt, the critics; into something beautifully unholy. Here are two Grammy Award winners, Sam Smith and Kim Petras."

Kim wasn't the only artist who made history at the Grammy Awards 2023, as Beyoncé became the most decorated Grammy artist of all time.

After winning the best dance/electronic music album award for her latest album Renaissance, the 41 year old's total of Grammys reached 32.
