Harrison Ford’s stunt double sets himself on fire at Hollywood strike

Harrison Ford discusses Indiana Jones legacy

Harrison Ford’s stunt double for the fifth rendition of Indiana Jones, Mike Massa, took to the front of the picket lines at the SAG-AFTRA strike for a sensational show of solidarity on Monday.

Appearing in Atlanta at a rally filled with dozens of stunt performers, coordinators and choreographers, Mike strutted out on stage in a dapper suit with a picket sign and foot-long flames covering his back, arms and legs.

One fan captured the incredible moment, as Mike walked out to thunderous applause, with a caption that read: “We are tired of being burned by the AMPTP.”

Mike’s own Instagram hosted a clip of his stunt, showing him in slow motion to the tune of Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne with the statement: “Stunts are done being burned by the AMPTP”.

The performer also took the opportunity to share a thanks with the team behind the scenes that helped him, safely, set himself on fire.

He added, explaining the meaning behind his jaw-dropping move: “We wanted to make a statement, and I think we did.”

While Mike was the rally’s sensational finale, the protest also saw a range of speakers sharing their own experiences and demands that had motivated them to join the strike.

Actress and stuntwoman Elena Sanchez heartbreakingly attested: “The AMPTP is opposed to us sharing the rewards of a successful show because we don’t bear any of the risks.”

That statement alone issued a chorus of boos from the crowd, but the actress continued: “Excuse me? Tell that to my friend John who lost his life working on one of your TV shows.

“Tell that to any of us in this room who have literally broken bones and bled for you.”

Elena was talking about John Bernecker, a stuntman for the long-running zombie series The Walking Dead.

He was performing for an episode in season eight of the show when he fell from a 25-foot-high balcony onto a concrete floor.

John was rushed to hospital where he tragically died two days later from his injuries at the age of 33.

Following his sudden death, John’s mother filed a lawsuit accusing AMC of maintaining an unsafe set but two years after the tragedy a Georgia jury found the network not to be negligent.

Mike and Elena, like 160,000 other Hollywood stars, are part of the SAG-AFTRA union which went on strike on July 14, joining their writing counterparts on the picket lines across Hollywood.
