Abbie Quinnen, 24, has revealed how one of the hardest things after suffering third-degree burns was coming to terms with her own reflection. The girlfriend of former Strictly Come Dancing star AJ Pritchard detailed her emotional reaction to seeing herself for the first time, after being involved in a freak accident at home while filming a YouTube video.
I was in bed struggling
Abbie shared how she has suffered horrible abuse on Instagram since the incident, and admitted it had been especially difficult to take in after struggling to accept her changed appearance.
She said: “When I was in hospital, staff tried every day to persuade me to talk to a therapist, but I just didn’t want to, I wasn’t ready.
“Even looking at the reflection of my face in my phone screen was hideous.”
When eventually she spoke with a counsellor, they asked her to look into a mirror to help her accept what had happened to her. She continued: “I was hysterical.”
Abbie has credited AJ with helping her recover, but did feel upset when he was going out to work on the Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks.
She explained: “He was able to get on with his life whereas I was in bed struggling with the consequences.
“I wasn’t thinking straight, I know he was trying to be strong for me.
“Then I caught AJ crying once and he was trying to say ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry’. I was shocked because he’d obviously been keeping it in for weeks,” she added while speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on The Jeremy Vine show.
Abbie has said she has cried every day since her accident in mid-January when she ended up in hospital, after filming how a glass bottle could be cut in half to be used as a vase.
The trick involved dipping a rope into a flammable chemical, wrapping it around the bottle and lighting a flame.
However, the glass exploded during the dangerous stunt and engulfed Abbie’s upper body in flames, leaving her with third-degree burns.
Abbie was pictured out for the first time earlier last month while going for a walk with AJ.

The freak accident was first revealed in March and a source divulged to The Sun that she had needed multiple skin grafts to treat her burns.
Opening up about Abbie’s injuries, AJ told the publication: “There are different areas, and there are different degrees of burn and she will have a small scar in certain areas.
“But, as with time, they will heal and other areas will heal.
“I think the most important thing was that the skin grafts worked.”
Abbie thanked her fans for all their support as she explained the extent of her injuries.
She wrote: “Whilst we were attempting to create a glass bottle into a vase following a YouTube tutorial, it went terribly wrong and it resulted in me incurring injuries and burns requiring continuous hospital treatment over the past seven weeks.
“I really need you all to be careful with what you’re doing and if you’re copying any YouTube videos. I will be OK, I love you all.”
She added: “I also want to say a massive thank you to the nurses and doctors and the Chelsea & Westminster burns unit for their incredible care and treatment.”
