Chef James Martin, 48, discussed his school years, love for cars and being a chef as he reflected on his career in a new interview. The This Morning regular revealed he once continued working with a knife in his arm before he walked to the hospital to seek help.

“It was the norm back then, thank God it’s not the norm now,” he divulged.

“I remember having a knife through my arm and having to finish work first before I could walk to the hospital.

“I couldn’t cycle because I had my bike nicked, I didn’t have a car, I couldn’t afford a car then.”

James said at the time he also didn’t know where the nearest hospital was, so walked and hoped for the best.

After eventually finding it, he told staff he had slipped and fell over in the kitchen.

But refusing to let the accident get in the way of his career, he revealed he was back to work the next day.

Speaking on the Andy Jaye podcast, he added: “You look back now… would I do it again? Of course I would.”

In the same chat, James discussed how he went from using food vouchers to becoming a successful chef.

He explained: “I took a punt as a young kid, we opened a hotel which became incredibly successful.

“Everybody on that team was prepared to work, and we made it work, and they’ve all gone on to be really successful which is great.”

James went on to say that success wasn’t always about how much money somebody had, but what they had achieved in their life.

“Looking at it over a four to five year period, you had nothing and then all of a sudden you had something,” he added.

According to CelebrityNetWorth.com, the chef is now believed to be worth a staggering £3.6million.

He is the proud owner of two restaurants and also fronts his weekly ITV show Saturday Morning.

James previously insisted he had regrets about choosing his career over having his own children.

The chef has been in a relationship with Louise Davies, a television producer, since 2011.

He told Prima Magazine: “The biggest low of my career is that I’ve given up everything for it.

“I look at my mates and they’re all married with kids, and that’s not the case for me because I’ve been so focused on work.”

He added: “The level of commitment it requires and the choices you have to make have a huge impact.

“But would I do the same thing again? Probably, because it’s made me who I am. And why does everybody have to follow the norm anyway?”
