Jennifer Aniston revealed in the aftermath of her split from Brad Pitt that she went through a period of 'grieving'.
The former Friends star was so shocked by his affair with actress Angelina Jolie , and the subsequent breakup of their marriage, it felt like Brad had died.
Jennifer and Brad's marriage came to an end in 2005, after five years of being wed, and in her first interview in the weeks after the split, Jen revealed her difficulties with coping in the beginning.
There had been cracks in the relationship, with Brad reportedly annoyed that Jennifer signed up to do a final series of hit comedy Friends.
It was during the filming of the finale that Brad met Angelina on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith, which would eventually tear apart his marriage to Jennifer.
Speaking to Vanity Fair in the weeks after the separation was confirmed, Jennifer admitted she was in a 'lengthy period of mourning'.
She revealed: "There are many stages of grief. It’s sad, something coming to an end. It cracks you open, in a way – cracks you open to feeling.
"When you try to avoid the pain, it creates greater pain."
Jennifer also revealed the difficulty of having such a high profile split.
She continued: "I’m a human being, having a human experience in front of the world. I wish it weren’t in front of the world.
"I try really hard to rise above it."
At the time, Jennifer was finding it hard to understand why the split had happened and had to believe that it was her fate, otherwise it would be too hard to comprehend.
She about the struggle: "I have to think there’s some reason I have called this into my life. I have to believe that – otherwise it’s just cruel."
The pair were officially divorced on October 2, 2005.
