Kate Garraway's husband's battle against coronavirus is 'longest in UK'

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper has now spent six months in hospital after contracting coronavirus – and it’s claimed his battle is now ‘the longest of any Covid-19 patient in the UK’.

Derek was first hospitalised in March after first falling ill with the virus, and he was placed into a medically induced coma in intensive care after as his symptoms worsened.

While he is now coronavirus free and out of a coma, Derek is still battling the impacts it has had on his body.

It’s said he is one of five people around the world to be affected so badly by Covid, with The Sun claiming Derek’s hospitalisation is the longest of any patient in the UK.

It’s reported Derek has been in hospital for 184 days, surpassing the previous 141 day record.

Sources close to Kate reportedly told the publication that Derek’s progress is ‘very, very slow’, but she is finding hope in the fact that Derek is still here when so many others have sadly lost their lives.

‘Her strength is awe-inspiring,’ the insider said, claiming: ‘Derek has now been hospitalised for six months which makes him one of only a handful of people who have been in hospital for this long.’

‘It’s incredibly tough for Kate though because some days he shows signs of improvement, and then 24 hours later he has taken a worrying turn for the worse. It’s literally one step forward, two steps back,’ they added.

Kate recently shared an update on Derek’s health with fans while presenting Good Morning Britain, as she explained that her husband had a ‘tough week’ after former Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent her his support.

The presenter candidly opened up about her husband’s condition in an interview with You magazine and explained just how badly his body has been affected.

‘At first it was all about Derek’s lungs, but then his kidneys started failing and he was on dialysis,’ she explained. ‘Now they’ve realised Covid can affect every cell of the body: most recently Derek’s been having problems with his intestines.’

She continued: ‘The absorption of food and vomiting are problems and they’re trying to work out whether that’s because his cells don’t produce the enzymes to digest. His liver and heart and blood vessels have been affected.’

Kate and Derek married in 2005 and the couple share two children together; daughter Darcey, 14, and son William, 11.
