Matthew McConaughey's dad predicted he would die while having sex

Matthew McConaughey has opened up about the death of his father James in 1992 – and it’s a story you might not quite expect.

As the 50-year-old prepares to release his latest memoir Greenlights, he spoke more about his family during an interview with People.

Matthew explained that James died just as he knew he would – by making love to his wife.

He recalled: ‘I got a call from my mum: “Your dad died”. My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him.

‘Except mum. He’d always told me and my brothers, “Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin’ love to your mother.”

‘And that’s what happened. He had a heart attack when he climaxed.’

Matthew’s dad and his wife Kay had an on-again, off-again relationship over the years, marrying each other three times prior to his death.

The actor continued: ‘They were, at times, violent. As I say in the book, that is how they communicated.

‘They were divorced twice, married three times, I mean, yeah, it was like the Pacific Ocean in a storm.’

Matthew himself is a father to three children: Levi, 12, Vida, 10 and Livingston, eight, who he shares with his wife Camila Alves, 37.

The star admitted that his kids have become ‘more self-reliant’ as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, as he explained: ‘They have doubled down on their hobbies, creative things and parts of themselves I don’t think they would have leaned into if they were back in school.

‘One of the assets of this Covid quarantine is they’ve been forced to be more self-reliant. They’ve been forced to create their way out of boredom.’

One of the skills that they picked up while staying at home was photography, with Matthew saying ‘all three’ of his kids are ‘into it’.

He added: ‘They’re becoming a production crew. It’s very cool, [and] they’re starting to get kind of good at it.’
