Melissa McCarthy recalls ‘being bullied by adults’ as a teenager

Melissa McCarthy recalls speaking to Meghan and Harry

Melissa McCarthy, 52, is known for her down-to-earth and often self-deprecating sense of humour. She recently revealed that it originated from a very real, heart-wrenching experience in her teen years that she believes largely shaped her personality.

The Bridesmaid star, who is “flattered” to have been chosen as the cover of People’s 2023 Beautiful Issue, spoke on the topic of body image and self-confidence, saying the opportunity is almost an appreciation for her younger self.

Melissa made a few candid revelations about her childhood, noting that she was “never called Melissa” but rather nicknamed Missy by everyone, including her parents.

The Hollywood star discovered her creativity in high school and began experimenting with her look, opting for a brutal “punk and gothic” exterior, admitting her personality didn’t quite match.

She joked: “I looked like I was going to get into a fist fight but then I was like ‘Hi! What’s your name?!’ I couldn’t be cool.”

Donning “mowhawks and blue hair”, Melissa recalled simply walking down the street would earn her odd looks and random strangers of all ages would “make fun of me or say really mean things to me”.

However, rather than being deterred and beaten down by this reaction, the budding comedian was “fascinated”.

She explained: “I’d never had that and I just kept thinking; ‘You don’t know me, you haven’t talked to me, I haven’t done anything to you.’

“It was a real big eye-opener that people are just judging left and right.”

She also began to seek out others who opted to stand out in the crowd, which earned her a group of “very very eccentric friends that are constantly delighting me”.

The actress concluded: “I have no regrets”, but revealed that it would still take over a decade from her teen punk days to find acceptance in her own skin.

Melissa noted that in her 30s, after meeting her husband Ben Falcone, 49, she had a revelation: “I was like ‘I’m okay with who I am.’ And if someone wasn’t thrilled with that, that’s okay too.”
