There’s Significance Behind Shakira’s Viral Tongue Moment at Super Bowl 2020

Fans could not stop talking about Shakira‘s tongue moment at the 2020 Super Bowl, but it actually has cultural significance and fans on Twitter are explaining.

The moment actually appears to be a nod to her Colombian and Lebanese heritage.

One fan took to Twitter to explain, “Quit the stupid jokes. This is called zaghrouta (a.k.a. ululation in English). It is a joyful sound Arabic speakers make when cheering & celebrating. #Shakira #ShakiraXJLoSuperBowl.”

Another fan posted, “FYI: Shakira’s “tongue flicking” is a cultural reference to Barranquilla’s Carnaval and a celebration of Colombia’s culture. Hey guys? Your ignorance is showing.”

Shakira has not yet spoken out about the moment. Be sure to watch the entire halftime show if you missed it!
