Sir Tom Jones, 80, was a guest on the Later… with Jools Holland tonight as he opened up about his career and his new album. At one point in the interview, the singer revealed what his wife told him after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Sir Tom opened up about his late wife Linda in an interview with Jools.

When the presenter mentioned it had been a hard few years for Sir Tom, he replied: “Yes it has.”

He explained how this had helped inspire his new album as well as a particular song that reminded him of his late wife.

Sir Tom said: “Songs take on a new meaning from experiences that you’ve had in life.

“After living for 80 years, I thought let’s do an album with songs that I’ve collected over the years.

“With songs now that mean more to me now than before.

“Like ‘I Won’t Crumble’, there’s a song on there, the opening song.

“And my wife, God bless her, when she knew that she had lung cancer and it was incurable.

“And I said ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen’ because it happened pretty quick.

“She said, ‘don’t fall with me, I’ve got to go but you’ve got to carry on here.’

“And she said to my son Mark and myself, ‘You two have got to mentor one another now, you’ve got to carry on.’

“That’s what she said so that song really became important to me because of that.”
