The Bengaluru City Police Friday confirmed the arrest of two people after a group of people were allegedly found gambling during a raid at a deaddiction centre in the city.

According to the police, as many as 14 people were found gambling at Sri Mahadeshwara Deaddiction Center located within the limits of Byadarahalli police station. “A case has been booked under relevant sections of the Karnataka Police and National Disaster Management Act. Honappa, the owner, and his cousin Ashok Kumar, who manages the institution have been arrested,” police confirmed.

Officials added that Rs 78,000 was seized during the raid and an investigation is now underway.

On a day that Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa indicated that efforts to remove him had been rebuffed by the BJP central leadership, the state cabinet decided not to proceed with a controversial decision to sell 3,667 acres of land in the Ballari region to steel major JSW Steel as part of a 2006 agreement.

The deal, cleared in April, had been questioned by a section within the BJP seen as opposed to Yediyurappa.

Following a Cabinet meeting Thursday, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Basavaraj Bommai said the April 26 decision to sell the land to JSW Steel had been put on hold. “There are a number of cases in the Supreme Court and a PIL has been filed in the high court,” Bommai said, adding they would take a call on the matter based on the legal outcome.

The Central Crime Branch Police, Bengaluru, has arrested three more persons in a racket involving allocation of Covid-19 beds, including a man with links to the aide of a BJP MLA.

The MLA, Sathish Reddy, incidentally had accompanied BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on a ‘raid’ of a Covid-19 war room in Bengaluru South, tasked with allotting beds, on May 4, which had led to police launching a probe into the matter.

The arrest of the three — M Babu, 34, with links to Reddy’s aide; Varun S, 20, who was employed in the Bengaluru South war room; and Yashwanth Kumar, 21 — takes the total number of people held in the case to 11. Babu is considered a key suspect in the racket, that was more the result of a few people seeing an opportunity to make quick money rather than a coordinated scam.
