1,000 farm ponds planned for Pudukottai

The Pudukottai district administration has targeted to create about 1,000 farm ponds during the current financial year, Collector P.Uma Maheswari has said.

Ms. Maheswari, who inspected some of the farm ponds being established by the Agricultural Engineering Department at Thiruvarankulam taluk in the district recently, said that the ponds would be established at a total estimate of about ₹10 crore. The ponds would be established with full subsidy for farmers, she said.

The Collector said that during 2018-19, 184 farm ponds were established in the district and during 2019-20, 824 farm ponds had been sanctioned at an estimate of ₹8.24 crore. However, the district administration was seeking to give a push for establishing more ponds and was planning to create 1,000 ponds as the structures would help harvest and store rainwater.

Farmers who wish to avail the subsidy for establishing ponds in their farms can apply to the Assistant Executive Engineers of the Agricultural Engineering Department at Thirukokarnam in Pudukottai or at Rajendrapuram at Pattukottai Road in Aranthangi.
