Autorickshaw operators stage protest in Udupi

Members of the Udupi and Manipal Autorickshaw Operators Association staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday against self-driving two-wheeler rental operators.

Addressing the protestors, Raghupati Bhat, MLA and honorary president of the association, said that the operations by self-driving two-wheeler rentals had affected the business of the autorickshaw operators.

The association would not hesitate to approach the courts on this matter as the rentals were operating without proper permission, he said. Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh, who came to the spot and accepted the memorandum, said that the two-wheeler private rental operator concerned had not taken permission to start its operation in Udupi.

Hence, nine scooters which had been parked in public places had been seized. He said that he would hold a meeting with the Regional Transport Office and District Police on this issue and take appropriate action.

The operators who were satisfied with the assurances given by Mr. Bhat and Mr. Jagadeesh, then withdrew their protest.
