Coalition has suffered an unexpected defeat: Khader

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge U.T. Khader said on Thursday that the coalition has suffered an unexpected defeat in Lok Sabha election in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the State.

In a statement, Mr. Khader said the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) have suffered defeat despite good work by party workers. “We gracefully accept the verdict of the people,” he said.

Mr. Khader said the Congress would review the party’s performance and come back strong to preserve the secular values of the nation. While congratulating Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, for getting re-elected to the Lok Sabha for the third successive term, Mr. Khader said the State government would cooperate with the Centre in the development of Dakshina Kannada.

Mr. Khader thanked all officers and personnel involved in the peaceful conduct of elections in Dakshina Kannada and ensuring a good turnout of voters.

The 46,839 votes secured by the Social Democratic Party of India’s candidate Mohammed Eliyas were the ones of people disgusted by the BJP’s communal agenda and the Congress’s breach of trust, said SDPI Dakshina Kannada district unit president Athaullah Jokatte.

In a statement, Mr. Jokatte said the Congress should take the blame for the rise of BJP in the region as it has failed to effectively counter the latter.

People will pay a heavy price for bringing the BJP back to power for the second term, he said.
