Cultural event heralds Onam celebrations in district

Theatre festival begins with staging of Amma; pookkalam competition today

‘Devabhoomika’, a musical play presented by actor Asha Sharath and team marked the beginning of the district level Onam celebrations in Kozhikode on Monday.

The presentation featured 40 artistes interlinking several traditional art forms of the State. The play was directed by filmmaker T.K. Rajeev Kumar while actor Mohanlal’s commentaries were an added attraction. The music was by Ramesh Narayanan.

Earlier, Transport Minister A.K.Saseendran opened the celebrations while A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, presided over the event. Lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri was honoured on the occasion.

The theatre festival as part of the Onam festivities began with the staging of Amma, a play by the Kollam-based Kalidasa Kalakendram.

Kalaripayattu and Pancharimelam performances at the Mananchira Square were other attractions of the day.

A pookkalam competition will be the major attraction of the second day of the Onam celebrations.

The competition will be held at BEM Higher Secondary School from 10 a.m.

A mehfil by Shameer Binsi and Imam Majboor will be held at Tagore Centenary Hall at 6 p.m., while Pattu padunna Vellayi, a play by Valluvanad Brahma will be staged at Town Hall at the same time.

A celebrity tug-of-war at Mananchira Square at 3 p.m., karate performances and folk art forms, besides orchestra are the other attractions.

The Onam celebrations are being organised by the Department of Tourism along with the Kozhikode district administration and District Tourism Promotion Council.
