For MG varsity, employability is the key

First university in State to start job-oriented short-term courses with an eye on skill development

In line with the demand for job-oriented courses that cater to market requirements, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, has launched a set of applied, short-term, part-time certificate and diploma courses under the Directorate for Applied Short Term Programmes (DASTP).

With this, the varsity becomes the first in the State to offer such short-term courses that focus on skill-development and have labour-market value.

Announcing the new courses, MGU Vice Chancellor Sabu Thomas said here on Wednesday that the programmes were being run in association with the eight study departments and the five research centres under the varsity. Steps were also in place to associate with various international research organisations and industrial experts.

“These on-campus courses are designed around market requirements with hands-on experience in the relevant area. The classes will be held only on evenings and weekends while the learning programme and paper valuation will be based on the advancements in information technology,” he said.

Youth’s preference

According to him, a decisive shift has already taken place amongst the youngsters for grabbing job-linked technical and vocational courses at the first opportunity. “The market requirement today is on quality and relevant courseware that make students career-ready,” he said.

The courses

The certificate courses, to be completed in one semester, encompass 16 credits where as the diploma courses will have 32 credits and span two semesters.

All the courses are based on an eight-point scale for grading.

Those who have completed Plus Two or an equivalent course can join the six-month certification programme while only graduates can join the postgraduate certification and diploma courses.

The certificate courses on offer include business data analysis, parenting psychology, Internet programming and Web technologies, waste management, water harvesting and management, among others.

The postgraduate certificate courses are offered in food analysis and quality control, English language teaching, nanoscience and nanotechnology, and emotional intelligence.

Applications can be sent through the website dasp.mgu.ac.in till 4 p.m on July 21.
