Former judges to administer Tirunelveli diocese

To ensure effective administration of Tirunelveli CSI Diocese, which runs many educational and healthcare institutions, Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday appointed two retired High Court judges as its administrators.

Justice R. Mahadevan appointed former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court N. Paul Vasanthakumar and former Madras High Court judge Justice P. Jyothimani as administrators of the Diocesan Council of Diocese of Tirunelveli and Tinnevelly Diocesan Trust Association (TDTA).

“While penning this order, with great pain, I observe that the noble object with which the educational and healthcare institutions were created is being defeated,” the judge said.

The court appointed the administrators to control the affairs of the Diocesan Council and TDTA, caught up in management issues, so that truce was achieved among the newly-elected executive committee, Bishop/Chairman and Financial Administrator appointed by the CSI Synod.

The court said the administrators were at liberty to appoint a retired district judge for assistance and ordered that the executive committee elected in 2017 with Bishop J. J. Christdoss as chairman shall henceforth function under the guidance, supervision and control of the administrators, until further orders.

The executive committee shall hand over all relevant records to the administrators within two weeks. The chairman shall hand over the documents pertaining to transfers, postings and appointments and the administrators shall find out if there was any irregularity.

All meetings of the executive committee shall be held under the supervision and control of the administrators and their decision will be binding on the members. All transfers, postings and appointments shall be placed in a meeting convened by the administrators. The monthly salary of teaching and non-teaching staff shall be paid through the correspondents as countersigned by the administrators.

The arrangement shall continue for one year and a periodical report be filed once in three months, the court said.
