Greens back struggle to protect Santhivanam

Environmental activists in Kozhikode came together under the banner of the district unit of All Kerala River Protection Committee on Tuesday in support of the ongoing struggle to protect Santhivanam, an environmentally invaluable sacred grove spread across nearly two acres at Vazhikkulangara near Paravur in Ernakulam district.

It’s been over a month since the struggle began against the Kerala State Electricity Board’s decision to place a tower inside the grove for the proposed Cherai-Mannam 110kV line project. Environmentalists say the project will destroy the flora and fauna of the place, which is being conserved for the past 200 years.

Opening the get-together on Tuesday, historian M.G.S. Narayanan blamed authorities for not caring about a place that houses many organisms that are endangered.

State general secretary of the committee T.V. Rajan and district secretary Shabareeshan T.V were present.
