Kerala landslip: body of child found in Malappuram district

10 bodies recovered so far, search resumes with support of 30-member Army team

Search and rescue operations have been resumed with the support of a 30-member Army team at Kavalappara in Kerala’s Malappuram district, where over 40 persons went missing following Thursday’s landslide. They have managed to recover the body of a child from the muddy landslip spot. With this, the total number of bodies recovered from the spot reached 10.

A 50-member National Disaster Response (NDRF) team too is working at the spot now.

A local body member said the weather was favourable for speeding up the search. The District Collector and other senior revenue department officers were camping in the area to coordinate the search operations, she said.

Three generators at the Kakkayam power house of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) were damaged following a minor landslip in the area. Officials said the Board suffered a loss of about ₹300 crore in the incident which took place on Friday night. People came to know about the incident very late as roads and other communication facilities were hit by the heavy rain and other related calamities. Though there were four KSEB employees at the spot, they managed to escape unhurt, the officials said. The power house building was filled with landslip debris, disrupting the power generation.
