Man kills mother, buries her body on the premises of house

Kollam police arrest him

Kollam East Police on Sunday arrested Sunil Kumar (50), a resident of Plamoottil Kizhakathil, Neethi Nagar, Pattathanam, for murdering his mother Savithiri and burying her body on the premises of their house in the city. The 72-year-old has been missing since September 3 and her daughter had filed a missing person complaint with the police on September 15.

Under observation

Sunil Kumar was under observation in connection with another murder case and was taken into custody on Saturday.

During interrogation, he confessed to killing his mother following a property-related quarrel and burying her body.

“He hit his mother during an argument and when he found she was dead, he secretly buried the body in a grave in their compound,” said an officer.

Neighbours say the elderly woman was regularly subjected to physical torture by her son, an alcoholic with a criminal background.

When Savithri’s daughter came to visit in early September, she found the house locked and her mother missing. After getting in touch with the relatives and checking hospitals, she filed a complaint with the East Police.

The sister said she had approached the police earlier also, but the mother was against registering a case and only wanted her son warned. “She preferred to stay with her son saying there was no one else to take care of him,” said the daughter.

The West police said though he was summoned to the station several times, his mother would come and release him.

On the lookout

The East police is currently on the lookout for Kuttan, a friend of Sunil, who allegedly helped him bury the body. Savithri’s body will be released to relatives after the autopsy at Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
