Now, schools decide to hold No Bag Day every Saturday

Students of some schools in Bantwal planted saplings, while a few other schools in the same taluk conducted elocution and quiz competitions as part of Swachhameva Jayate on Saturday last.

These activities were part of No Bag Day held across different schools in Bantwal Education Block on June 15. “We have planned to observe No Bag Day every Saturday, though the direction from the government suggested that it be held on the third Saturday of every month,” said Bantwal Block Education Officer N. Shivaprakash.

Mr. Shivaprakash told The Hindu that each school has designed its own set of programmes. “The programmes are related to the lessons they have taught or teaching. It will be an activity-based learning. A team of officials will visit schools and inspect its working,” he said.

The Bantwal block has the highest number of 405 schools in the district.

The State government issued a circular on May 3 asking all government, government aided private schools and private schools in the State to observe No Bag Day on the third Saturday of every month.

The schools were asked to hold activities such as field trips, science experiments and projects, art and craft activities, pictorial reading, cultural programmes, quiz, debate competition, and planting and other activities on the school premises.

“We have been observing No Bag day for the last two years. We will continue it this year by making further improvements to our activities held in the last two years,” said Deputy Director of Public Instructions, Dakshina Kannada, Y. Shivaramaiah. There are 2,079 primary and secondary schools in the district.

Mangaluru South BEO Lokesh S.R. said that all the 354 schools in his block will observe No Bag Day every Saturday.

“Students have enjoyed activities held last year. It is a new mode of learning that also provides a stage for students to exhibit their talent,” he said.

Mangaluru North BEO K.L. Manjula said that the schools have planned to hold activities every fortnight in the 336 schools in her block. While the activities are now a part of the yearly calender, the schools are yet to start it as teachers were now busy with the Class 10 supplementary examination and holding bridge courses, she said.
