Police get threat call against Union Minister V. Muraleedharan

Syed Muhammad, a Central Excise employee, has been detained in Kozhikode

The Kerala police have detained a person in Kozhikode on the charge of having made a telephonic threat to harm V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs.

Officials said the suspect, whom they tentatively identified as Syed Muhammad, a Central Excise Department official, called the police control room in Kozhikode on Tuesday night and made the threat.

The Kozhikode police traced the phone number to a BSNL employee in Thiruvananthapuram and local officers detained him. Investigators said he told the police that he attended a training programme with the official in Hyderabad in 2015 and they had struck a friendship. At the behest of the official, he initiated a mobile telephone connection in his name and handed over the SIM to the former.

The Kozhikode police are examining whether the official has any affiliation with any radical organisation. They are also examining his online profile. His mobile phone has been seized and sent for forensic analysis.
