Special joint inspection of school buses

MADURAI

A total of 36 private school vehicles were rejected as they did not meet the qualifications set by the Road Safety Council at a special joint inspection here on Tuesday.

Collector S. Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan, Deputy Commissioner of Police-Traffic Arun Balagopalan, road transport officers and inspectors took part in the inspection and checked a total of 375 school vans.

As per the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Special Rules 2012, school vehicles have to undergo a fitness inspection by Regional Transport Officers in May, so that it can be operated when the schools reopen.

To ensure that the vehicles are fit for use, the inspectors checked the installation of emergency exit doors, fire extinguishers, speed governors to prevent rash driving, sticking of the school bus symbol, putting window grills on both sides, provisioning of racks for keeping school bags under the seats and installation of first-aid box.

Since most first aid kits lacked proper medicines and fire extinguishers were missing in some school buses, they were rejected.

During May, a total of 1,389 buses have been checked for fitness at various RTOs. Those vehicles whose fitness is yet to be approved must make necessary changes and reapply to their nearest RTOs and receive their certificates before June, instructed officers.

Officers from Revenue and School Education department were also present during the inspection.
