Rights panel sitting ends

A sitting of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), chaired by panel member K. Baijunath, here on Tuesday settled 17 cases of the 36 cases that came before the panel. Mr. Baijunath directed the police and officials concerned to submit reports regarding the remaining cases.

The next sitting of the panel will be held on September 17.

Pondicherry University extends PG, Ph.D application deadline

Pondicherry University has extended the deadline for applying for admissions to various postgraduate, integrated postgraduate and Ph.D research programmes for 2021–22 till August 20.

The entrance examinations will be held on September 2, 3 and 4.

Assembly session to end by September 13

Based on the decision taken by the Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee, Speaker M. Appavu said on Tuesday that the ongoing session would end by September 13.

The Speaker made the announcement in the House and read out the revised schedule. The session was to have ended on September 21. The Chair did not list any reason for the rescheduling.

Businessman robbed

Transpersons robbed ₹17,000 from a businessman in Arumbakkam on Monday. Anwar, 42, who runs a security services firm on Vishalakshmi Street, Arumbakkam, and his friend Ezhumalai, was driving his car when he was stopped by two transpersons at a junction. He gave ₹10 to them when they demanded money. They snatched his wallet and returned it quickly. He found ₹17,000 missing in the wallet.

1,163 new cases in capital

The district reported 1,163 new COVID-19 cases and 782 recoveries on Wednesday. The test positivity rate stood at 9.8%. In all, 10,175 people are under treatment and 33,116 in quarantine in the district. Of the new cases, contact transmission accounted for 1,100 cases. The list also included one health worker.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the following areas due to conversion of overhead line into UG/ AB cable works. According to a release from BESCOM, West Circle, the areas affected are: New Timber Yard Layout, Mysore Land Layout, T.G. Palya Main Road, Mahadeshwaranagara Main Road, Hoysala Circle, Apoorva Layout and surrounding areas

Two dead in road accident

Two men died in a road accident in Tikota in Vijayapura district on Thursday.

Parashuramappa Lamani (60) of Atalatti Tanda and Bandu Rathod of Hubanur Tanda were the deceased.

Their vehicle hit a van near Ratnapur Cross. A case has been registered in the Tikota Police Station.

The consultations scheduled for August 21 at the Early Cancer Detection Centre, Kaloor, would be held on August 28, according to a communication from the centre.

Waqf Board members elected

P. Abdul Samad and J. Muhamed Shanavas, MLAs, have been elected members of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board.

KTR greets citizens

Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao has in a tweet congratulated the citizens of Hyderabad on the city getting Water plus status of Swachh Bharat Mission from the Centre.

Local holiday for Onam

The district administrations in Coimbatore and Tiruppur have declared August 21 (Saturday) a local holiday for Onam.

They said the declaration would be applicable to

those government establishments that worked on Saturday and education institutions.

To compensate the holiday, government offices would function on September 11.
