SRH bowlers rise to the occasion in must-win game

Royal Challengers Bangalore struggled to 120 for seven against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday. In a must-win match, SRH bowled a whopping 50 dot balls as the RCB batsmen, Virat Kohli and A.B. de Villiers included, looked staid and unadventurous.

After David Warner opted to bowl, RCB found batting tough on a slow, sticky wicket. All-rounder Vijay Shankar didn’t recover from a hamstring niggle but SRH didn’t miss his medium-pace bowling much. The first boundary did not come until the 12th ball, when Devdutt Padikkal pushed Jason Holder down the ground. But Sandeep Sharma broke through Padikkal’s defence, rearranging his stumps after the latter’s rash attempt at heaving one across the line.

It was left to fellow opener Josh Philippe (32, 31b, 4×4) to improvise and he displayed fine dexterity with two cross-batted slaps in the V for his first two fours. He then swept Rashid Khan above the short fine-leg fielder’s head for this third before hitting a full delivery from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem to the long-on fence. In the middle of this, the young Aussie was dropped by Nadeem off his own bowling.

But Kohli fell at the other end to Sandeep for the seventh time in the IPL. The skipper lent into a drive only to hit straight to Kane Williamson at short extra-cover. Sandeep’s fine opening spell (3-0-13-2) ensured that RCB would score a paltry 30 runs in the PowerPlay for the loss of two wickets.

Even the usually free-flowing de Villiers had to bide his time. He was initially clueless against Rashid and scored just 10 off 17 balls before two short deliveries from Rashid and Nadeem allowed him to free his arms.

But the dismissals of de Villiers and Philippe, in a span of five deliveries, left RCB reeling. From 76 for four in 12 overs, RCB added just 44 more.
