Trump to attend anti-abortion march in first for US President

Last year, Trump vowed that he would veto any bill that “weakens the protection of human life” in his address to the crowd.

President Donald Trump will become the first sitting president to address the anti-abortion March for Life in person with a planned trip to the rally on the National Mall on Friday as he courts conservative voters before the November elections.

The president has twice addressed the event via satellite from the Rose Garden, and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the rally itself last year. Trump announced his planned attendance on Twitter.

Organizers for the event said they were excited for Trump to join the protesters, who visit the Capitol each year to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that protected the right to abortion.

“He will be the first president in history to attend and we are so excited for him to experience in person how passionate our marchers are about life and protecting the unborn,” Jeanne Mancini, president of March For Life, said in a statement.

Last year, Trump vowed that he would veto any bill that “weakens the protection of human life” in his address to the crowd.

Consolidating support among evangelicals and other religious conservatives has been crucial for the president, and his attendance at the march comes as his re-election campaign is looking to rally supporters.
