Mirchi 9’s KK wrote, “Natural Star Nani is always a delight to watch for his free-flowing natural style of acting and comedy timing. He is repeatedly as good as the material allow him to be. So, it is invariably up to the content that makes him appear repetitive and less appealing or charming and instantly lovable. Overall, Gang Leader is a strict one time watch. An exciting and refreshing premise, few comedy scenes and a decent block in the second half are the reason for it. Give it a try if you have nothing else to do in this weekend, and go with low expectations.”

Anusha Iyengar of Zoom wrote in her review, “Of all the recent South films that I have seen, this is probably the only film with a very satisfying climax. The writer and director let you believe that the plot is predictable to an extent but the twist in the end is what works best for this film. The makers have not wasted too much of the audience’s time in lengthy story-telling or narration. It’s crisp, gripping and entertaining right from the start. Nani’s film is gripping and entertaining right from the beginning till the end. Despite the film being a multi-starrer, Lakshmi manages to steal the limelight in a lot of scenes. You’ll love watching her bond with Nani on the big screen.”

The Times of India’s Suhas Yellapantula said in his review, “Nani is the film’s heart and soul and brings Gang Leader to life with his charm, with and classic humour. But the haphazard nature of the script, a sluggish screenply and an overdose of melodrama hampers what had the potential to be a total laugh riot. The film’s USP is its humour, but when even that isn’t the best it could be — you know you’re in trouble.”

Oracle Globe wrote, “We must all thank Vikram Kumar for such a beautiful and fresh script. Nani’s fans will be more than happy with the outcome. As far as Nani fans are concerned, this film will meet their expectations. Nani’s performance, as usual, is terrific. This film belongs to him. He keeps the film gripping and engaging throughout. His screenspace is terrific. Nani’s comedy timing, looks, dialogues, acting everything is on point.”
