George R.R. Martin opens up about the Game of Thrones finale

George R.R. Martin reflects on the Game of Thrones finale and how the ending of his A Song of Ice and Fire books may be different than the series

After HBO aired the long-awaited series finale of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, who wrote the A Song of Ice and Fire books the show is based on, spoke out about his long-awaited book ending.

The 70 year old author has written the first five books in a planned seven book series, but the fifth book was published nearly eight years ago, which has long been the topic of discussion among fans who wonder when the last two books will debut.

On Monday, Martin took to his Not a Blog website to discuss the series finale, to thank the cast and crew for all of their hard work, and address when his long-awaited sixth (The Winds of Winter) and seventh A Dream of Spring) novels in the book series will be released, plus if the book ending is different than the TV show ending.

‘Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is. The Winds of Winter is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done,’ he stated.

‘I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A Dream of Spring,’ he continued..

‘How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes,’ he cryptically said.

Very late: ‘Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is. The Winds of Winter is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done,’ he stated

He also addressed how series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss work in a different medium, since they had eight hours of story to tell in the final season, and his last two books will be massive undertakings.

‘They had eight hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them,’ he said.

The author also said asking which one is the ‘real ending,’ between the show and the books, is, ‘a silly question.’

He also joked, ‘How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?’ referring to the differences between Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind and the successful film adaptation.

As for the ending, he suggested, ‘How about this? I’ll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.’

The author also made it clear that fans who have been waiting patiently for the last two books will be rewarded by learning what happened to several characters from the books who never made it to the HBO series.

Last books: The author also made it clear that fans who have been waiting patiently for the last two books will be rewarded by learning what happened to several characters from the books who never made it to the HBO series

‘There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet,’ Martin said.

The first book, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996, followed by 1998’s A Clash of Kings, 2000’s A Storm of Swords, 2005’s A Feast of Crows and 2011’s A Dance With Dragons.

Martin most recently released Fire & Blood, a book that outlines and details the history of House Targaryen, which was released on November 20, 2018.
