Hugh Grant doesn’t want to make any more romantic comedies for surprising reason

Hugh Grant says Brexit has ruined his country

Hugh Grant claims he’s finished making romantic comedies, despite the genre helping to kick start his career in the 1990s.

The Hollywood star is famous for rom-coms including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Music & Lyrics, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and the Christmas classic Love Actually.

Grant shared the reason why he thinks rom-coms are off the table for him in the future, and it’s surprising to say the least.

During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, host Drew Barrymore – who starred with the British actor, 63, in Music & Lyrics – asked about how it feels to be in his “renaissance” era, which Barrymore, 48, called his “Hugh-aissance.”

“Lovely. I told you I got a bit better. I got a little less bad after I had children, got married, got happier,” he said referring to having a career resurgence following a break.

“I got too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies, obviously, so I got off with more interesting things.”

For years, fans have begged the pair to reunite for a sequel of their 2007 rom-com or for another similar project.

Despite Grant’s views of himself and his future in the rom-com world, Barrymore said she still sees him as worthy of a leading role in a romantic movie.

“It’s funny because I don’t see you that way at all and, in fact, everybody, after we were together, was like, ‘Why are you two not in a film together?'” she said.

Come on then,” responded the Wonka actor.

“We need to do another one,” said Barrymore.

Whatever Grant thinks, it was good to see the pair together again no matter the occasion, especially since they recently had drama.

Earlier this year, Barrymore responded to her former co-star calling her a bad singer by posting a video of herself singing back at him.

Grant’s comment came during an interview for Wired, in which he answered the web’s most-asked questions about him.

One question asked whether or not Grant really was singing in Music & Lyrics.

He admitted that he and Barrymore were both edited to sound better.

“I’m AutoTuned beyond belief…But not as much as some. Drew Barrymore was in that film with me, and I don’t think she’d mind me saying, her singing is just horrendous. I mean, I’ve heard dogs bark better than she sings,” he joked.

“But having said that, once they tuned her up, she sounded way better than me because she’s got heart and voice and rock ‘n’ roll. Whereas I sounded like Julie Andrews and I meant to be kind of rock ‘n’ roll as well,” Grant added.

Barrymore responded on social media by singing a bit of Way Back Into Love from the 2007 romantic comedy.

This isn’t the first time Grant has been blunt about the movie genre that shot him to fame.

According to Wion, Grant bluntly called some rom-coms a “big fat lie” while speaking to reporters in Paris in March.

“The big question is whether the whole idea of a man and a woman belonging together — and this being something we are all desperate for — is true, or a big fat lie,” Grant said.

He added: “I mean, how many really happy relationships do you know? There’s not many. All those romantic comedies I made — it would be very interesting to have the sequel now, which would presumably start with the divorce lawyers.”

Grant has never shied away from revealing his true thoughts on anything, let alone rom-coms.
