Kym Marsh fires back at claims she makes women feel bad about their weight: ‘People can be very sensitive’

I was stunned to see the photos of Adele on her birthday last week. She looked incredible and really happy. I know some people have been shocked by her weight loss and some have even criticised it, insisting we don’t know whether she did it healthily or not as she’s not commented on it.

Adele has lost a considerable amount of weight but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s done it rapidly. She seems like she’s been doing it slowly over time. Her body is her body so it’s up to her whether she wants to tell people how she’s done it. As long as she’s happier, that’s all that matters.

With weight, you sometimes can’t do right for doing wrong. Whether you’re bigger or smaller, someone always has something to say. I’ve been bigger than I am now but I train hard and eat a healthy diet. I still get criticised! I put up a photo of myself after running a 5K recently and someone commented on my Instagram that I was trying to make other women feel bad. How? By exercising and being healthy? I don’t think that’s a negative message.

I think the conversation around weight is tricky because people can be very sensitive. Last week, I saw that Phillip Schofield was accused of supporting fat-shaming during a fiery debate on This Morning. They were discussing the possible links between being obese and dying from COVID-19 after a recent study found that if an obese patient was admitted to hospital with the virus, their chances of dying were 37 percent higher than normal.

One of the experts, Dr Phillipa, argued that obesity can often be down to genetics but Phillip asked why there were not as many overweight people years ago. I don’t think Phillip was fat shaming. Obesity is on the rise and we can’t be afraid to have an honest discussion about it. If being overweight puts people in a vulnerable category for something like coronavirus, that could be a big wake up call. I understand that for some people, losing weight can be difficult for various reasons. But I also think it’s wrong for those people to accuse doctors or medical experts of fat shaming if they point out that being obese is a health issue.

I’m with Kate

Kate Beckinsale hit out at critics of her age gap relationship with 22-year old musician Goody Grace. Kate, who is 46, said that men can do whatever they like but “it can feel like a political act when a woman over 32 has any fun at all.” I totally agree with her. I’m with a younger man. Scott is 32 and I’m almost 44. I hate when people describe him as my toyboy as I think it’s patronising to him! Men are often with much younger women and no one bats an eyelid but when it’s the reverse, people seem to judge. I’m in the best relationship of my life and Scott and I have so much in common. Age is just a number.

Scott is back!

Speaking of Scott, he’s back and I’m practically buzzing with happiness as I write this column he’s is finally home after seven months away. Scott’s back home for two months and I’m so glad to be with him again. We decorated the house for his return and I got him a cake. The first morning that I woke up next to him, I felt on top of the world. I’ve been feeling anxious and stressed with lockdown but having him home has really lifted my spirits.
