Kym Marsh has opened up about having pre-cancerous cells removed following a routine smear test and encouraged women not to miss their checkups, even in the ongoing pandemic.

Writing in her OK! magazine weekly column, 44 year old Kym explained that she was worried that new statistics have shown women seem to be missing out on their routine smear tests during the pandemic.

The actress and presenter went on to express the importance of keeping up with our general health and warned that other illnesses and diseases haven’t gone away because coronavirus is here.

Kym said, “New stats have shown that one in three women have missed their smear tests during the pandemic. It’s so important we don’t let our general health slip right now. If you find a lump, or something’s not right, you need to go to the doctor.

“There are people working. You should definitely be making your smear appointments, too. We all know how important it is to have smear tests as women.”

Kym, who presents Morning Live alongside Gethin Jones, then opened up about going through a smear in the past that showed she had pre-cancerous cells.

Kym said, “I am someone who has had pre-cancerous cells – I’ve had them removed and, touch-wood, I’m fine. But imagine if I hadn’t gone to that smear test at that time? You’ve got to be vigilant.”

The presenter then issued a stark warning to women, pleading them to keep up with their health if they suspected anything was untoward. Kym said, “Coronavirus is going on, but other serious illnesses and diseases don’t go away so we’ve got to be aware.”

Kym has spent the last few months dealing with her own health problems, as the presenter has been waiting for an operation on a hernia.

She recently explained to OK! magazine that she missed the first week of filming the new series of Morning Live because she had finally been given an operation date.

After going through keyhole surgery, Kym said she is looking forward to being able to get back into her exercise routine.

She said, “It’s nerve-racking being put under anaesthetic, but it’s a relief to have it done and I’m hoping it won’t be long before I’m training again, as I’ve really missed it. All being well, I’ll be back in the studio with Gethin from next week!”

The star also recently gave OK! her view on influencers who travelled abroad during the pandemic, stating she wished the government would shut the borders. She said, “You could pick it up and then bring it back. I think we should just shut the borders and none of us travel anywhere.”
