Michael Ball, 59, has revealed he felt an “instant connection” the first time he set eyes on his long-term girlfriend, Cathy McGowan, 78, after she first interviewed him back in 1992. The West End star described the ex-Ready Steady Go presenter as “a very powerful woman” who has supported and inspired him throughout his successful career.

Speaking about his first meeting with Cathy, Michael said: “Cathy came into my life when I was doing Aspects of Love. She came to interview me.

“I was just starting to move into a new level of success – Love Changes Everything really projected me into a different realm.

“There I was on Top of the Pops. When we met we had an instant connection,” he added.

Michael admits he fell for Cathy’s “strong nature”, however, they did not begin a romantic relationship straight away.

He continued to The Big Issue: “She was so wise and kind and strong, a very powerful woman.

“We were friends while I was doing the show in London, then I moved to Broadway and things blossomed,” he added.

As Cathy was older than Michael, she was able to provide him with much-needed stability in his life.

However, their 20-year age difference is something that often pops up in conversation with people; something that Michael insists is “irrelevant” when it comes to their relationship.

The singer spoke about their romance and revealed he thinks he’s now “too old” to be considered a toyboy anymore.

“Every night is a date night with Cathy!” he beamed, as he discussed his other half.

“I’m too old to be a toyboy, and age has never been an issue or thought about.

“We’ve been together about 30 years now, and all I can say is I wish I looked as young as she does, because she looks amazing!”

Michael has often raved over Cathy in previous interviews, describing her as a “unique and wonderful person” inside and out.

“I just love her. She’s a unique, wonderful person,” he said in a 2019 interview with Express.co.uk.

“She’s taught me so much and she’s made me laugh like a drain – and vice versa.”

But when the couple’s age difference cropped up into conversation, he pointed out how it would not be spoken about as frequently if he was the older one in their relationship.

“People sometimes ask about the age difference,” he said.

“It’s irrelevant. No one would mention it if I were the older one.

“Why does it make any difference?”

Despite nearly three decades together, the couple has no plans to tie the knot.

In 2019, Michael told The Mirror: “It’s just not something that we need to do. My public life is insane, but once that front door closes I leave that version of myself outside and I just like to relax at home.”
