Sony's 2021 'Cinderella' Remake Already Has an All-Star Studded Cast

Sony is currently in pre-production for a remake of the beloved fairytale princess story, Cinderella, slated for release on February 5, 2021. Producer, director, screenwriter, and actress Kay Cannon, known for writing and producing the Pitch Perfect trilogy, will direct the adaptation with talk show host James Corden taking on producer duties.

While it’s currently unknown if Sony’s Cinderella will follow the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, if it does, it would be the third remake and fourth version after Robert Iscove and Whitney Houston’s 1997 popular film.

Even though Sony has only cast, or in talks with, three main characters for their rendition of Cinderella, it’s already shaping up to be a diverse, possibly historical, and talented group.

Billy Porter – Fairy Godmother

According to several outlets, the actor is currently in talks with Sony to portray the Fairy Godmother in their Cinderella remake. It’s unclear if it will be the Roger’s and Hammerstein adaptation, but if it is, he will follow the late Whitney Houston, who brought the role to life in 1997.

Also a Tony and Grammy Award winner, Porter recently won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy Award for his iconic work as emcee Pray Tell in FX’s Pose, making him the first openly gay black actor to do so.

Outside of television and Broadway, he is known for his bold fashion statements at award shows, including a Christian Siriano custom made half tuxedo half gown which shut down the Met Gala.

Camila Cabello – Cinderella

The 22-year-old Cuban singer will lead the remake as the star character. She will follow the footsteps of actress and singer Brandy in her acting debut. In 2012, she rose to fame with girl group Fifth Harmony after appearing on music competition show, The X Factor.

However, she explored solo ventures, including collaborations with singer Shawn Mendes and rapper Machine Gun Kelly before officially leaving the group in December 2016.

Her self-titled debut album, released in 2018, peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, much in part to lead single “Havana” featuring Young Thug, which sat at number one in several countries for weeks.

Over the 2019 summer, she released her second number-one single featuring rumored boyfriend Shawn Mendes, “Senorita.” Even though Cinderella will be the singer’s acting debut, she’s appeared in a few web television series, including Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse.

Idina Menzel – Evil Stepmother

Broadway royalty Idina Menzel is in talks with Sony to appear in another movie-musical as the Evil Stepmother. The singer and actress will presumably follow the footsteps of a similar Broadway star, Bernadette Peters.

After rising to fame for her unforgettable portrayal of Maureen Johnson in Rent (1996), earning her a Tony nomination, she officially broke through with her Tony-Award winning rendition of Elphaba in Wicked (2005).

Menzel recently voiced Queen Elsa in the musical film, Frozen (2013), in which she performed the popular Oscar and Tony-Award single, “Let It Go.” She also received a Grammy Award for her participation and collaboration on the musical’s soundtrack.

In addition to performing on Broadway and appearing in several television shows and movies, Menzel has released five studio albums, fifteen singles, and two live albums. Her 2014 project, Holiday Wishes, features a duet with Michael Buble and is certified gold.
