Rs 22.42 crore: average assets of new Maharashtra MLAs, 107% jump over 2014

The 55 Shiv Sena MLAs surveyed have an average asset of Rs 13.74 crore. On the other hand, while 53 NCP MLAs scrutinised have average assets worth Rs 15.02 crore, for 44 Congress MLAs, the figure is Rs 24.46 crore.

THE NEW members of the Legislative Assembly are way wealthier than average Maharashtrians and the numbers suggest that the wealthy and well connected would be over-represented in the House this time.

A study conducted by NGO Association for Democratic Rights (ADR) has stated that the average assets of the 285 elected MLAs it surveyed was worth Rs 22.42 crore. The average assets of 288 MLAs elected in 2014 was Rs 10.87 crore. This is a jump of nearly 107 per cent.

For the 105 BJP MLAs surveyed, the average assets per MLA comes to Rs 27.47 crore. The 55 Shiv Sena MLAs surveyed have an average asset of Rs 13.74 crore. On the other hand, while 53 NCP MLAs scrutinised have average assets worth Rs 15.02 crore, for 44 Congress MLAs, the figure is Rs 24.46 crore.

Of the 285 MLAs whose details were analysed, only 21 have assets have less than a crore. Nearly 93 per cent of all MLAs have assets of over a crore. The percentage share of crorepati MLAs is the highest in the Congress — 96 per cent of its elected representatives are crorepatis — followed by BJP with 95 per cent, Shiv Sena 93 per cent and NCP with 89 per cent.

The MLAs with the lowest assets are CPI(M)’s Palghar MLA Vinod Nikole, who has assets of only Rs 51,082, followed by BJP’s Malshiras MLA Ram Satpute (Rs 10 lakh) and AIMIM’s Shah Faruk Anwar (Rs 29 lakh).
