Two held for sending Rs 15 lakh lottery fraud to Pakistan handlers, says ATS

The agency said it was still ascertaining whether the duo was involved in money laundering, the exact number of people duped by them and any other person involved in their work.

The Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Monday arrested two men for allegedly sending money to their alleged Pakistani handlers after cheating people in a lottery fraud in Ghaziabad.

Prakash alias Jaiprakash Ruhela of Shamli and Dheerudeen Chaudhary of Muzaffarnagar were running a lottery withheld of their Pakistan-based handlers. They were living in Ghaziabad.

Police claimed Ruhela was in contact with 10 Pakistan-based handlers and was sending money on their direction. In the last one-and-a-half months, they have sent over Rs 15 lakh to their handles.

Ruhela was earlier arrested in 2013 in a lottery fraud, while Chaudhary had three cases against him, said police.

Acting on a tip off, police arrested Ruhela and Chaudhary from Mohan Nagar area. They have recovered 32 ATM cards, four cellphones, passbooks and cheque books from the accused.

The men will be produced before a court on Tuesday, said Additional Director General, ATS, DK Thakur.

“Their arrest has also thrown up links to suspected people working for their Pakistani handlers in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Kolkata in West Bengal,” the ATS said in a statement.

The agency said it was still ascertaining whether the duo was involved in money laundering, the exact number of people duped by them and any other person involved in their work.

A case has been registered at the Lucknow office of the ATS and the duo booked under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (fraud) and 467, 468, 471 (all related to forgery), it said.
