63-year-old Virar man kills wife after suspecting affair; arrested

Son finds mother lying dead, reports father to police

A 63-year-old autorickshaw driver was on Sunday arrested by the Virar police for allegedly killing his wife as he suspected her of having an affair.

The accused, Kishore Futane, and his wife, Sulbha, lived with their 27-year-old son in Virar (East). The son had stepped out to purchase groceries when the incident took place at their residence on Sunday afternoon. “When the son returned home from the market, he saw the woman lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries on her body. The accused was also present,” a police officer said.

Assistant police inspector Vivek Sonawane said on realising that his mother was dead, the boy came to the police station and registered a first information report against Mr. Futane. “We went to their residence to take the accused into custody, but in the meantime, he had reached the police station and surrendered,” Mr. Sonawane said.

The officer said Mr. Futane attacked his wife with a sickle and knife. “After that, he repeatedly hit her on the head with a pestle till she died. Multiple injuries were found on Sulbha’s body, especially her head. We are investigating the accused’s claims about the deceased being involved with another man and that being the motive,” he said.

Officials said Mr. Futane confessed to the murder. He said he wanted to slit her throat, but missed and hence he hit her with a pestle. He was booked for murder under the Indian Penal Code and arrested on Sunday evening. A court on Monday remanded him in police custody till September 15.
