Assembly session from today

For YSRCP, it marks return to the House after a gap of 20 months

The first session of the 15th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly will begin on Wednesday at 11.05 a.m. with the newly-elected members taking the oath.

Pro tem Speaker Sambangi Venkata China Appala Naidu, a senior member from the Bobbili constituency, will administer the oath to the MLAs-elect.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will take the oath first, followed by Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The other members will follow suit in the alphabetical order.

Speaker election

On (Thursday) June 13, the MLAs would elect the Speaker. The YSRCP has already announced that former Minister Tammineni Sitaram, a five-time MLA from Amadalavalsa, will be the Speaker.

In all probability, he is likely to be elected unopposed, given the YSRCP’s overwhelming strength in the House.

The YSRCP has 151 members, and the Opposition TDP 23. The newly floated Jana Sena Party (JSP) has one MLA. In the 14th Assembly, Kodela Siva Prasada Rao was elected unanimously as the Speaker. The YSRCP, which was in the Opposition then, had supported his candidature.

Later, Deputy Speaker will be elected. The YSRCP has announced that Kona Raghupati will be the Deputy Speaker.

Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan will address the joint session of the legislature on June 14 at 9 a.m.

Later, the Assembly will pass a motion of thanks to the Governor’s speech on June 17 after a debate. The session is likely to go on till June 18.

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) will decide the duration of the session.

CM may unveil roadmap

The Chief Minister is likely to introduce his Cabinet colleagues to members of both Houses after the election of the Speaker.

Mr. Reddy is also likely to address the House, thanking the people of the State for giving a massive mandate to his party.

He is likely to speak on the roadmap for the implementation of the election promises. Mr. Reddy and his MLAs will be attending the Assembly for the first time in 20 months.

The YSRCP had boycotted the sessions from October 2017, alleging that Dr. Siva Prasada Rao was not taking action against the 23 MLAs who had defected to the TDP.

The State government plans to convene another session during the month-end to present the full budget. The outgoing TDP government had presented an interim budget in January.
