Over ₹1 crore taken, burglars believed to have entered through window

About ₹1.43 crore in cash was reported stolen from the BHEL Employees Cooperative Bank Limited on the outskirts of Tiruchi on Friday. The theft of the cash, which had been kept in a suitcase, came to light when the accountant Ravindran opened the bank on Friday morning.

Police said Ravindran had withdrawn ₹1.5 crore from IDBI Bank on Thursday. While Rs. 7 lakh was kept in a bag in a shelf inside the bank, the remaining Rs. 1.43 crore was reportedly kept in a suitcase which was not locked, police said. The money had not been kept inside the chest of the cooperative bank. Ravindran, who opened the bank in the morning, found the cash missing from the suitcase.

Police said the side window of the bank building was found “disturbed”, and suspect that the culprits could have gained entry through the window. Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, Ziaul Haque was at the spot conducting inquiries along with jurisdictional police officers.
