Creation of Tenkasi district hailed

A long-pending demand of the people of Tenkasi has been finally met with the the Chief Minister’s announcement in the Assembly on Thursday to create a new Tenkasi district.

Tirunelveli district comprises revenue divisions of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Cheranmahadevi, 16 taluks, one corporation, six municipalities, 36 town panchayats, 19 panchayat unions, and 425 village panchayats.

Various political parties, while canvassing support during Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Tenkasi, had promised to fulfil the demand. Non-governmental organisations too raised the issue.

Ramanathan, founder of Vanchi Iyakkam, said that his organisation had been making this demand since 1985. The move would help several people from areas like Sivagiri, Puliyangudi and Vasudevanallur as they had to go a long way to reach government offices including the Collectorate.

Members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi distributed sweets at Puliyangudi to celebrate the announcement.

When an announcement to create a district of Kallakurichi in Villupuram district was made, people were hopeful of Tenkasi becoming a district as well.

A letter was sent by the Additional Chief Secretary/ Commissioner of Revenue Administration to Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish to prepare a feasibility report for creating a new district.

During the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s visit to a party event in Tenkasi a few days ago, he had said that the government was considering creation of a new Tenkasi district in response to a question raised by MLA Selvamohandas Pandian.
